Mr and Mrs Ward’s playfully named ‘Down Under Lodge Pillows’ introduce a touch of luxe to any boudoir. The lodge pillow is historically something you find in hotels on super-king beds. The lodge pillows are also comfy to lean back on when we look out at the Oratia view in the mornings,” says Janice Kumar-Ward. From a design perspective, soft-furnishings maker Belvedere and Janice saw beds getting larger, so the standard pillow case started looking too small.

The pillow inners are 55cm x 85cm and plump with white duck feathers contained within a cotton ‘feather guard’ – no more floating feathers when you fluff them up. Made in collaboration with Belvedere, a family-run soft-furnishings maker in West Auckland, the duck-down filling is humanely harvested. Belvedere sources feathers and down from audited suppliers where the birds’ welfare is paramount – no live plucking or force feeding.

Keeping with the West Auckland connection, Janice and Julian approached Arcanum Linen, a boutique screen-printing studio with a workshop near the Oratia Stream. Owner Anne Sherriff is passionate about design, colour and fine screen printing, and collaborated with Mr and Mrs Ward on the pillow slips. These feature a striking black-and-white stripe. On the other side of the pillow slip is a calligraphy signature. The design that is contemporary one side, classical on the other is hand-printed onto 100% pure percale cotton with a 300 thread count.
